Sweets: A Collection of Soul Food Desserts and Memories

Author: Patty Pinner

PATTY PINNER was raised in a large extended family in the small town of Saginaw, Michigan. In between earning her master's degree in education and working for the USPS as a training and development specialist, Patty makes time to work at her family's restaurant, Ern's Seafood Restaurant. Patty lives in eastern Michigan.

KLIATT

Having grown up in a large African American family, Patty Pinner fondly remembers the rich and sugary desserts that ended each meal. Each recipe includes a description of the occasions on which each was served, and a commentary about the woman who usually prepared the dish, with many photos from her large and loving family. After reading the book introduction, chapter introductions, and recipe commentaries, one has a good sense of Pinner's loving family history. Her descriptions of the individuals featured make them come alive. Some of her special recipes are: Big Mama's 'Nana Pudding, Sister Hewlett's Sugar Cookies, Aint Bessie's Pineapple Pie, Sister Baby's Whiskey Cake, Cud'n Flossie's Walnut Wonder Cake, Cud'n Ebelle's Old-Fashioned Sugar Pie and Make You Want To Slap Yo' Mama Blueberry Pie. The recipes are great and the stories are wonderful.
